
Pr Hechmi Louzir
Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), Independent Expert, and Former General Director of the Institut Pasteur de Tunis
Prof. Hechmi Louzir is a Professor of Medicine and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis / University of Tunis El Manar, and former General Director of the Institut Pasteur de Tunis, a position he held from July 2007 to October 2023.
Following graduation from the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis, he completed residency at the Institut Pasteur in Paris.. At the end of 1988, he joined the Immunology Laboratory at the Institut Pasteur de Tunis and the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis as an Assistant Professor.
He developed numerous research programs on host-pathogen interactions and contributed to the development of educational programs in fundamental and clinical immunology
He is the author or co-author of over eighty scientific publications and several patents.
He was involved in over thirty research projects funded by international organizations and supervised the research work of more than forty students, including six PhD theses.
Prof. Hechmi Louzir held the position of General Director at the Institut Pasteur de Tunis from July 2007 to October 2023. He was elected to the Assembly of the Institut Pasteur in Paris and became a member of the Executive Council of the International Network of Pasteur Institutes. He also coordinated the MATI region (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Iran) from 2008 to 2019 and later, the Euro-Mediterranean region from 2021 to 2023.He also served on numerous scientific boards of institutes and international research organizations and acted as an expert evaluator for several research programs funded by the European Commission and other international agencies.
During the COVID-19 crisis, he played a central role in managing the scientific response to the pandemic in Tunisia, leading the Scientific Vaccination Committee and overseeing the national vaccination campaign.
Prof. Hechmi Louzir is a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Advisory Committee on Health Research for the Eastern Mediterranean Region and a member of the Lancet Commission on 21st Century Global Health Threats.
